Pop Wuj Community
The
school is owned and operated by a teachers'
cooperative whose job assignments include teaching, administration,
direction of projects, direction of extracurricular activities such as
field trips, movies, and lectures, supervision of host families, and
making teacher and family assignments. These cooperative members and
auxiliary teachers also perform all the necessary day-to-day chores—from
sweeping the floors to rewiring the lights. The students usually find
themselves sharing in these tasks voluntarily. Pop Wuj has very much a
community atmosphere: we all get to know each other, and we try to make
the school a "home away from home" for our students.
Our maximum capacity is now 32, but we often have fewer students.
Our
students range from preschool children who study with their parents to
retired persons in their seventies. The average summer student is
college-aged, but there are frequently many others of all ages. We do
accommodate families and are able to teach children, depending on their
ages. We suggest you house together if your children are
young. No one will be admitted as an unaccompanied minor (under age 18)
unless he or she will be 18 within the calendar year and has written
permission from parents.
