Immersion Program

The formal classes in Spanish are given five hours a day, five days a week, on a week by week basis. The instructional program at Centro Pop Wuj follows the time-tested method of personalized, one-to-one conversational practice with an educated native speaker of the language. Instruction in formal grammar is of course provided as necessary, but the emphasis is always on the language as it is actually spoken. The student is continually practicing what he or she is learning. For intermediate and advanced students, the study of Latin American and Maya-Quiché literature is also offered. When a student completes his/her time with us he/she will receive a diploma in recoginition of their studies and for their participation in community projects.

The idealistic goals of our teaching staff do not detract from our professionalism. Our teachers are university educated and have had extensive experience in teaching Spanish as a second language. Not only do our teachers do excellent work here in the center but the majority have also participated in conferences at universities and high schools throughout the United States and Europe on themes such as "The Mayan Cosmovision," " The Pop Wuj," and " Literature of Latin America." Our instructors are familiar with and sympathetic to the needs of the beginning student. They are experts in the structure of their language, good conversationalists, and good listeners.
