Registration

The school can enroll a maximum of 32 students at a time. The months of January, June, July and the beginning of August generally book early. Please e-mail or call before you send in your application, since the summer sessions fill up fast.

  • Tuition    The tuition for study in the immersion program is $160 a week, mid-May through mid-September and the month of January. The tuition for all other months in the immersion program is $140 per week.This fee covers the entire program, including instructional time (at least 4 1/2 hours, five days a week), room and board with the student's Guatemalan family, and the school activities in which the student may choose to participate. Students who elect not to house themselves with a local family should deduct $30 from this weekly tuition.

  • The per-student cost for the Social Work/Development program is $160 per week for undergraduate and graduate students, and $180 per week for practicing professionals.

  • The Medical and Healthcare program tuition is $180 weekly

  • Enrollment in the Immersion and Medical/Healthcare programs    You can beginp your studies at Centro Pop Wuj on any Monday and stay for as many weeks as you like, although a stay of at least three weeks is recommended in order to take full advantage of our program. Call or e-mail to confirm space, especially during the busiest season (June through August, and January). If your requested dates are unavailable, we will notify you promptly and recommend alternative dates or another school.

  • Enrollment in the Social Work/Community Development program is limited to the months of January, April, May, October, and November. Classes begin on the first Monday of the month.

  • Applications should be completed  at least three weeks before your desired start date. Your application should be accompanied by a nonrefundable registration fee of $65 for the immersion program. Registration inthe Medical/Healthcare program the Social Work/Community Develpment program is $150. Please note that the registration fee is not applied toward the tuition.

  • Registration payments should be made through the link to Paypal. These can be made in dollars, euros, or British pounds. To make other arrangements, contact the Registration Coordinator, Jorge Archila, at info@pop-wuj.org. You can also wire your payment to a Western Union office in Quetzaltenango.

  • Tuition Payments in Guatemala    Your tuition should be paid directly to the school upon arrival in Guatemala. You may pay with a cashier's check drawn on a U.S. bank and made payable to Asociación Centro de Estudios Pop Wuj. You may use cash, travelers checks or MasterCard or Visa. If you use a credit card, an additional 10% tax is required for international usage. The reason that we ask that you not prepay your full registration fee is because of the cost and delays involved in transferring money from the states. Note: American Express credit cards are currently hard to use in Guatemala.

  • Cancellation    Contact registration coordinator, Jorge Archila, at info@pop-wuj.org as soon as possible if you find you must change your schedule, so that we are able to open the space to another student and offer a refund. The registration fee is nonrefundable.

  • Arrival    It is preferable for you to arrive in Quetzaltenango on a Sunday in order to get settled in with your family and not miss any activities. (The school is closed Saturdays, but open on Sundays from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.) If you arrive on a Saturday, you will need to plan to spend the night at a hotel. If you wish to be met at the airport in Guatemala City by a representative of the school, this service is available for $15 extra. The representative will take you to either to a hotel or to the terminal where you can catch the bus for Quetzaltenango (Xela). The additional $15 charge should be paid directly, in cash, to the representative. If you are traveling with others, each additional member of your group will be charged $5. You may also stay overnight with the representative's family for $15.

  • Departure    The airport departure tax is currently $30, subject to change. Be sure to include this in your budget.

  • Legal Requirements    Citizens of the United States and a few other countries need only a valid passport. Citizens of other countries will need to obtain a visa from a consulate before they leave for Guatemala. This may be done by mail, but you should allow at least three to four weeks for the process.

  • Confirmation    We will send you e-mail or written confirmation, along with a lot more information about the school, how to get there, and what you should bring with you when you come. If you have additional questions, email or call the  registration coordinator.

  • Holidays    No classes or activities will be scheduled on these days: New Years Day, January 1; Good Friday (date varies); Dia de los Maestros (in July); Guatemalan Independence Day, September 15; and Christmas Day, December 25.
